Record GTA V clips on PC and PS5: pick the right capture tool

Choose your capture tool before a memorable moment disappears. PC Rockstar Editor recordings and PS5 system video capture are different workflows. Start with your platform, then save a short test clip to check that the result contains the action and audio you intended.

Start with the recording you need

For a shareable view of what appeared on your PS5 screen, use the console’s capture menu. On PC, Rockstar documents its in-game recording controls and the separate Editor menu. Follow the branch for your platform; a tutorial showing a missing menu may be describing an older release.

Two official workflows covered by this guide.

PC: record first, then open the Editor from Story Mode

Rockstar’s PC instructions say to hold the character-switch control—Alt on the default keyboard setup, or down on a controller’s D-pad—and follow the recording prompts. They list F1 to begin recording and F2 to stop by default; use your current on-screen prompts if you have changed bindings.

To edit recorded footage, enter Story Mode, pause and open the Rockstar Editor tab, then Clip Management. Rockstar says the Editor menu is not available from GTA Online, even though the recorded material can come from GTA Online or Story Mode. If you cannot see the menu, first check your current mode rather than assuming your clip was lost.

PS5: save what happened, or record the next attempt

Press the Create button to open the capture menu. Save Recent Gameplay is the choice for an event that just happened; Start New Recording is for the next attempt. Open Create again and select Stop Recording when you are done.

PlayStation’s guide explains the available recording lengths and capture settings. Check Settings → Captures and Broadcasts for format, resolution and audio options. Before a longer session, make a short capture and play it back. Some content cannot be captured, and voice-chat audio has its own settings; ask other participants before including their voices.

Make the clip useful to the next viewer

Keep enough lead-in to explain the setup and enough ending to show the result. A title such as “Car chase in GTA V Story Mode” gives a viewer more context than “You won’t believe this.” Identify a custom server, modification or staged setup when relevant instead of presenting it as ordinary unmodified play.

  • Review the saved result: action visible, intended audio present, and no unintended private information on screen.
  • Name the game, mode and platform or PC edition when known. Add a spoiler warning for story events.
  • Upload through your own creator account and keep the original public link. Credit other creators whose work appears in your submission.
  • Submit the original link with a short explanation of what happens and any verified setup details. A submission goes to review; it is not automatically published.
